Modern Stair Design | What Makes A Stair Modern?

Modern Stairs (or Contemporary Stairs) are currently in demand. With Mid-Century Modern Home remodeling and new modern construction, installing a stair that reflects the modern design (contemporary design) aesthetic is critically important.

From years of building Modern Stairs, here’s what we know:

Modern Stair Design: Materials Matter

Without ornamentation to distract the eye, the quality of the materials becomes incredibly important. While we often associate modern design with glass or metal, wood has an incredibly important part in establishing the modern design aesthetic.

When considering your modern staircase design, we often suggest bringing several species of wood into the staircase to contrast and enhance design elements. In the modern staircase pictured, we combined walnut and oak then accented the stair with a glass balustrade.

Modern Stair Design: Combine Curved and Straight Lines

When you look back at Modern Design in furniture, often there are straight lines artfully combined with a gorgeous curve. (Think of the famous Eames Lounge Chair by Charles and Ray Eames.) Sometimes Modern Design is accomplished with a gracious curve and impeccable engineering. (Think of the Arco Floor Lamp.) We could go on. The point is that Modern doesn’t mean boring and it doesn’t mean all straight lines. We’ll work with you to find the perfect balance.

Modern Stair Design: Use Light

The gorgeous curves and materials that go into modern design deserve to be seen. With amazing LED technology, your staircase can become a sculptural masterpiece – providing a focal point that emphasizes your entire design approach. Using light in new ways allows you to have a signature staircase unlike anything else.

Reconsider the Balustrade

Often, because most stairs we see every day have a railing (balustrade) made of spindles in wood or metal with a handrail sitting on top, it’s the way people think a staircase needs to be. You might want to rethink that. Using a parapet wall as the balustrade allows you to extend the design of the staircase without introducing any other materials, shapes, or lines. As opposed to a floating staircase with lots of air around it, people find this type of staircase to feel very secure.

Explore Full Radius Design

Using a spiral or helical staircase design is one way of creating a full radius staircase – but that’s not the only way. Curved staircases can also turn a complete 180 degrees and in the process create a substantial visual element. Most often we install these stairs in the main foyer or center of the house, and they do an incredible job of amplifying your architectural vision.

Use Geometric Shapes … Maybe a Zig Zag?

As we’ve said, one of the most common thoughts when people are designing a modern stair for the first time is that it has to be all straight lines. This just isn’t the case. We’ve built thousands (and thousands) of modern stairs. Some of the stairs with the biggest impact have artfully combined curves and straight lines. In this case, we used a sawtooth stringer on the outside edge of the stair to create a zig zag pattern. (Think of the iconic Zig Zag chair designed by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld.) The zig zag pattern adds visual interest and is an interesting juxtaposition to the curve of the stair. Combined with integrated LED lighting (shown in the photo near the top of the page), it’s gorgeous.
